djuice National Gaming Championship 2009The “djuice National Gaming Championship 2009” came to an end on Aug 16, 2009 at the EXPO Center in Karachi after a month long journey from July 14th in search for the best players for various PC and Video Games in Pakistan. Qualifying rounds were held in 8 cities across 40 gaming zones in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Pindi, RahimYar Khan, Bahawalpur, Hyderabad and Quetta in which a total of 3,031 participants registered to play. There were a total of 6 popular games for which the championship was held; Counter Strike 1.6, Defense of the Ancients (DOTA, Call of Duty 4 (COD4), Medal of Honor –Allied Assault (MOHAA), FIFA09 (on PC and PlayStation 3), Need for Speed –Most Wanted (NFS-MW). Four of these games were team games (5vs5) from both Action and Strategy genre’ and two of them were single player games (1vs1) from the sports genre’.In the end a total of 417 players qualified to play at the national finals in EXPO Center on Aug 16th, 2009. A turnover of more than 800+ spectators came to enjoy the festivity throughout the day with lucky draws for prizes and t-shirts and a chance to play. After a very competitive national final at EXPO Center, Karachi which, continued very late in the night and the following day Karachi came out on top overall and won three (3) champions trophy’s, three (3) runner-up positions and 5 second-runner-up positions; Lahore won a single champions trophy, three (3) runner-up positions and two (2) second runner-up positions; Islamabad won three (3) champions trophy’s and Hyderabad a single runner-up position. The other cities were not able to secure any top positions and were eliminated early on. djuice gave out a number of prizes like Laptops, Nokia and Samsung Phone sets, Speaker Sets and Gaming Accessories to the first three spots in each game. This year there were some major upsets especially in Counter Strike, DOTA, Call of Duty and FIFA09 where some of the top professional teams and players were eliminated in the early rounds and could not make the top positions. Wiredup Gaming was the national organizer for the event contracted by Telenor Pakistan to organize the qualifying rounds in various cities as well as the national event at EXPO. There was a setting for about 100+ computers on the stage and a separate Playstation lounge for the FIFA09/PS3 players. Spectators were provided with large screens to watch but it was hard to control them getting on the stage to cheer their teams on.
